He began his banking career in as an assistant manager with the Chase National Bank, which merged with the Bank of Manhattan Company to become Chase Manhattan.

He became president of Chase Manhattan and its co-chief executive in Inhe became the chairman and sole chief executive of the bank. He retired from active management inbut continued to serve Chase as chairman of its international advisory council and to act as the bank's foreign diplomat. He was also a philanthropist. He wrote an autobiography, Memoirs, in He died on March 20, at the age of So, reading this memoir for the purpose I sought was entirely unsatisfactory and indeed troubling.

The book reeks of an uber privileged scion of the Rockefeller dynasty playing politics throughout the world without ever really understanding or acknowledging the carnage that he contributed to. Rockefeller recounts his gilded youth, where he delivered food to the poor with the help of a chauffeur, roller-skated along Fifth Avenue tailed by a limousine in case he should grow tired, and attended dinner with a father and mother who ate every night in their formal wear.

As much as he gave, Rockefeller had the same propensity for collecting. Despite his good deeds and philanthropy, I have a hard time with the man. I have little tolerance for rich men playing king maker roles and pulling the strings they think should be pulled while standing aloof of the impact of their views and policies. I wasn't expecting very much from this book, despite my dad's recommendation, but the thing that I found most interesting was the backdrop to David Rockefeller's life.

There's a clear and pronounced transition from the Edwardian era he grew up in to the modern era--he's still alive--and the tensions that come with that. These are David Rockefeller's memoirs, and the writing style is clear and chatty, so this was a pleasure to read.

This is someone who has led an interesting life, with a lot of opportunities to be on the edge of change and to influence it. He does seem to recognize that he was born on third base, and probably would have made some success of his life if he had not been born so well off, but clearly a lot of his position derives from his family resources.

For example, he might well have become quite senior at Chase Bank if he had really started as a management trainee, but despite protests that Chase was not a Rockefeller bank come on, your uncle is the president, and much of your family's wealth is managed by its trust department he was likely the heir apparent from day one, and it was only his to lose.

He is committed to social change and to doing good really confirmed for me by the attitude of people whom I have known who worked for Chase Manhattan, thus it seems that Rockefeller's view did permeate the bank. However, I will look for some assessment by others of his work, because his solution to world problems seem universally to set up some council made up of name people that he knows, and he is too much into name-dropping.

There is also a sense that he could have been more decisive or assertive - getting rid of a major rival off the Chase board by changing the board retirement age seems pusillanimous at best. Overall, however, this was fun to read for a good review of 20th century history, I am also intrigued to see that he has outlived everyone - as of my writing this he is still alive at years old.

Fascinating and very readable. I'll only give four stars because of the very real possibility that Mr. Rockefeller is not being completely forthcoming about certain issues. Matt Bucklin. I found this book fascinating. It is amazing that one man has so many amazing stories. David Rockefeller played a significant role in banking, politics, New York City real estate, international relations, and philanthropy in America, and the world.

This book combines his incredible perspective with important history. James Roman. Author 13 books 14 followers. Nice to know that it's all here, but pages is a lot of Rockefeller. Useful as a historical text. I'm glad the public library has a copy. Thiago Alves. Vale a pena a leitura! Well that was slow and painful. I jest but only sort of.

This is a thorough personal and family history and it's about what you'd expect from one. It's interesting to get his view of the various world leaders and historic events Mr. Rockefeller met and was involved in and there a good deal of candor he brings to "not everything is perfect in Rockefeller-land". Nonetheless, the writing is dry and lacks the passion necessary to get the reader to set aside the feeling of pages of humble-bragging.

A great book about a very influencial man from a very influencial family. Anne Cross. Very detailed, sometimes too much for me. Gave a good account of events that happened during his life. Very rich family but also very generous. His was an interesting life, perhaps 50 pages too long. Emre Dundar. I could not have imagined the candor with which he flaunts his disdain for America is currently showing the impact of his hate.

Everyone should read this book. Edwin A. The responsibility of riches. Amazed by all the worldwide connections. I enjoyed the read and will leave judgement to others. God and man. The book is a bit long, after a point it starts feeling boring. Nevertheless a great read from one of the most famous business families that this world has ever seen!
